Description
Large, banana-like leaves on sturdy stems characterize all heliconia. Often confused for heliconia inflorescences, or flowers, the plant’s spectacular, vividly colored, waxy bracts are really tiny, inconspicuous tropical blooms enclosed in the vividly colored bracts.
Purchasing advice:
Look for fully colored stems. When heliconias are cut, they stop developing. Stems with visible dryness or black spots on the stems or bracts should be avoided.
